14-year-old Benalla Auto Club member Zak Best scored his maiden race victory in the Aussie Racing Car Series at Phillip Island on the weekend.
Best, competing in just his second round of the series, carved his way through the field in the weekend’s third race, which featured a handicap reverse-grid format. Best took the lead at the end of the race’s fourth lap, only for the Safety Car to be deployed due to a multi-car pileup at turn 4. The officials declared the results from the end of lap 4, handing Best the win.
“In only my second round of the Aussie Racing Cars, my goal was to finish inside the top 10 so to come away with a win really exceeded my expectations,” Best said.
“It was a pretty action-packed race but I was able to work my way through the slower traffic and then hold some of the faster cars at bay.”
The race win enabled Best to finish in the top 10 overall for the meeting; the next round of the Aussie Racing Cars is at Hidden Valley in June.
